The Final Museum Addition For 2017, Grab a Bowl of Mike-Aroni And Take a Look!

Post by IrbeFan4Life » Thu Dec 28, 2017 5:44 pm

Here is my final addition for the 2017 year. Don't forget to "LIKE" Bruce C. Goaltending Museum on Facebook and follow us on Twitter if you like all things goalie. This is one of those jerseys I was excited to add to the collection!

Born on January 15, 1989 in Kingston, Ontario, Mike Murphy was a superstar junior goaltender for the Belleville Bulls of the OHL. Increasing his stats for the better in all four of his years in the OHL, Murphy was eventually selected 165th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2008 NHL Draft. In 2009-10, Murphy transitioned to the American Hockey League and in his first pro season with Albany, he recorded a winning record with a 0.917% in 20 appearances. The following year, he improved in every stat and got into 39 games, even getting Charlotte into the AHL Conference Final. In 2011-12 he began the season with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, but like every tale of my museum collection, the fortuitous moment happened. On December 6, 2011, while on recall with the 'Canes, Mike Murphy was placed into the game after Cam Ward surrendered 6 goals to the Calgary Flames. He stopped both shots he faced in the team's 7-6 loss. With the loss, Mike Murphy made NHL history, as he was the first goalie in NHL history to ever record a loss before surrendering a goal. He was credited for this loss because after an empty net goal that made the game 7-4, Carolina worked up to 7-6, and with Murphy in net after the "catch-up" point that took the loss away from Ward, Murphy was given the L. A few days later, on December 9, 2011, Murphy stopped all 7 shots he faced in relief of Cam Ward against the Jets. Those would turn out to be the only two games of his NHL career. The following season he went to the KHL, however, after posting underwhelming numbers, he was eventually signed by the Charlotte Checkers once more near the end of the season. He played in one additional season with Charlotte in 2013-14 and one final season in Austria in 2014-15 after which he retired from play.

In his NHL career, Mike Murphy appeared in two games and recorded an 0-1-0 record with a 0.00GAA, and a 1.000% save average. He appeared in zero playoff games.

The jersey you are looking at right now is a 2011-12 Carolina Hurricanes Set 1 Road Jersey worn by Mike Murphy in both of his NHL games including the game that put him into the history books. Wear is quite notable, featuring puck and stick marks, a nice team repair, post-paint transfer, an altered logo on the rear neck of the sweater, and a putrid odor.
